Running for a Better Oakland (RBO) is seeking an energetic, skilled and professional Executive Director to lead our team. The Executive Director will have a passion for nonprofit work to improve the lives of youth and build community while growing and strengthening the organization. The candidate should be self-driven and self-directed with proven experience getting things done across several functional areas.

Organization Description:
Running for a Better Oakland is a non-profit organization (501(c)(3)) that encourages Kindergarten – 12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles through running. By building confidence, setting goals, providing training and mentorship, RBO develops the values of achievement and hard work that students can draw on in all areas of their lives. RBO also develops friendships and strengthens the local community. The organization operates a Fall and Spring program; in the Fall, students train for a local 5K, and in the spring, they train for the Oakland Running Festival 5K or Half Marathon. RBO also offers scholarships to college-bound high school seniors. With the generous help of our volunteers we support over 300 students a year.

RBO strives to build a tolerant, healthy and prosperous community by empowering students, parents and volunteers, creating new relationships, trust, and self-esteem through the discipline and rigors of a structured running program.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director is responsible for leading RBO operations, representing RBO to the greater community, growing and managing RBO’s financial base, and reporting to RBO’s Board of Directors. This leader will have a passion and commitment to youth, drive program development and delivery, direct staff and volunteers, oversee fundraising, and manage organizational finances.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Program planning, development and management in collaboration with RBO's Program Coordinator

  • Oversee fundraising, including grants, donor cultivation and stewardship, and special events

  • Report to and strategize with RBO's Board to fulfill organization's mission and long-term viability

  • Oversee staff, independent contractors, and volunteers

  • Work with Board Treasurer, Finance Committee and accountant to oversee budgeting and accounting to ensure organization's fiscal health

  • Engage in community outreach and K-12 outreach to recruit participants and volunteers for the program and to build RBO's reputation

  • Engage in media and donor relations by overseeing social media, donor appreciation, website content

  • Manage contracts with suppliers

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible hours and a work-from-home environment during the week; most Saturdays and some Sundays during the Fall and Spring programs spent outdoors during the morning for approximately half the day

  • The Executive Director should be willing and enthusiastic about taking a hands-on approach to helping the Program Coordinator and volunteers set up the practice sessions and other events during the program; this involves carrying items such as tables and supplies, and setting them up and then breaking them down for storage.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for Executive Director would possess the following skills and characteristics: 

  • Experience managing, serving on the board of, or volunteering for a nonprofit community-based organization

  • Experience with nonprofit fundraising including cultivating and stewarding donors and/or organizing fundraising events

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills including writing, public speaking, public relations and social media

  • Administrative skills including bookkeeping and event planning

  • Accounting skills including budgeting and bill paying

  • A strong interest in working with and building community in Oakland among a very diverse group of youth, their parents, and volunteers

  • A strong interest in promoting health and wellness, through running and healthy lifestyles

  • Volunteer coordination

  • Promoting large events to wide audiences

Classification:
Contracted, part-time position (~10 hrs/week). 12-month contract paid on retainer. Option to renew in contract (preferred). Salary based on qualifications, but estimated annual compensation is $30,000. Background check and negative TB results to be completed prior to initial start. Full Covid-19 vaccination is required, unless a valid exemption is granted.
